In the working program of Austria’s new government in autumn 2019 the archives of the national public broadcaster ORF are explicitly asked to “open up and be digitally accessible within the legal framework”. ORF has been opening up its archives for academic and non-commercial research ever since in fulfillment of its educational mandate.

ORF-Archives have been encouraging and supporting universities, institutions and socially relevant organizations for years. For example, ORF-Archives have so far opened outposts at three universities in Wien, Graz and Innsbruck since 2011. Three more universities and academic libraries are likely to open up the next branches of ORF-Archives this year. At these outposts the academic community can search the entire database of ORF broadcasts since 1955.

In 2017 ORF has provided the first worldwide museum and library dedicated to Viktor Frankl, the founder of the logotherapy method, with ORF-content including television discussions, documentaries and speeches of Frankl.

ORF-Archives are also providing the foundation of Cardinal Franz Koenig with a huge amount of ORF-content about the Austrian archbishop. Its library is open to academic and religious researchers.

In 2020 ORF is intensifying its collaborations with prestigious organizations.

ORF-Archives are supplying the private foundation of Maria Lassnig with footage about the Austrian painter. The foundation’s academic library is now expanding its own archives with all relevant ORF-programs about and with Maria Lassnig as ORF hosts and broadcast many of her video arts.

The most time-consuming collaboration for ORF-Archives in 2020 has been the support of the Salzburg Festival celebrating its 100th anniversary in August. Numerous documentaries and programs are going to be broadcast on television and online.

The presentation will offer a lot of video material illustrating the mentioned case studies.
