Discussion panel: Using our archives to combat disinformation

Those who control the past, control the future; and those who control the present, control the past.” It may be more than seventy years since George Orwell published 1984, but his dictum has never seemed more relevant. Our archives can play a central role in helping audiences today combat a tide of misinformation and deliberate fakery.

We propose an introductory talk focussing on examples of best practice in the industry and look at some of the plans the BBC is making specifically. We would be keen to partner with RTÉ to host a panel discussion that would resonate with many of those attending the conference. What are the practical, scalable steps we can take with our archives to help audiences fact-check and navigate the truth? Does increasing access to the reporting of the past help provide a ground truth that wider society can use as a constant reference point?
