Raphael Leung

Data scientist
Raphael Leung is a Principal Data Scientist at Nesta, where he uses novel data and data science to generate useful evidence in the form of peer-reviewed research outputs for the creative industries.

Recently, using web-scraping and natural language processing, he analysed text on arts and cultural charities’ websites and registrations. The resulting report published by the Creative Industries Policy and Evidence Centre was recognised as “important grey literature in the field of Arts and Health" by the Sidney De Haan Research Centre for Arts and Health.

Previously, Raphael worked as a research fellow at a telecommunications non-profit in the US. He has worked at a behavioural economics consultancy and later as a software developer at the UK Parliamentary Digital Service for two years on a team building open data APIs.

He holds a Bachelors from Yale University and a Masters from the University of Oxford. He was on the winning team of the 2019 CORSMAL Challenge (computer vision and robotics) organised by the Centre for Intelligent Sensing at Queen Mary University of London.
